Expressionist Picture Painting

Long time ago, people had relied on drawings and paintings to maintain and experience again the times where great rulers had lived and historic events had happened. Prehistoric man had their drawings on cave walls. In Egyptian times, people had their drawings and paintings on their pyramids which showed their rich culture and traditions. The pictures they created through painting had shown men how huge the impact of their civilization had to our present time.

People of the ancient times painted persons with great powers over the country. Mostly, kings, queens, pharaohs, dukes, emperors and individuals with high authority were of the ones depicted on their paintings. At those times, the mindset of people logically was that the most important individuals must be painted larger than their minor attendants. Their belief of such idea and symbolism where they disregarded realistic depiction later emerged in what we call as Expressionist portrait painting and modern styles.

Creating a representation of a subject has always been measured through its likeness to the subject and those with that talent can be considered as competent artists. In making a portrait, the aim is to have an accurate and precise representation of the subject. In modern times, not only is the resemblance the thing to judge but now, the most important in making portraits way how the portrait can relate to the audience.

Known artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael had their own way of creating portraits. Not like the traditional way which was only to construct a real representation of the subject but they had added the psychological insights to their artworks.

In current times, photos have the ability to display the features of the individual or environment with more accuracy, more realistically and with less work not like the olden way of creating a painting. Still, painting had the ability to tell a story and also it allows the mind to think critically.

Expressionist portrait painting is not only concerned with having a painting that resembles the subject but it enables the artist to freely express himself through his art. Actually, the most known artworks produced through expressionist painting are those that hardly resemble anything. Mostly, those arts are just colors fantastically painted on a canvas. The colors can create an image in the mind of the audience. Mainly, the objective of an Expressionist painting is to depict the subjective expression of the artist and not the objective reality.
